UDDER FLAMING/SINGEING

One of the torturous practices “dairy” cows are forced to endure for humans’ taste buds is udder and belly hair removal. Dairy farmers claim that hair removal is a vital process to improve udder cleanliness and reduce bacteria and that udder flaming/singeing is a “humane” way to accomplish this. Udder singeing is further described as a way to remove hair “quickly and painlessly, using a 6” cool flame, eliminating the need to clip udders manually.”* The cows in UDDER SINGE demonstration video appear to disagree with the claim that it is painless: www.youtube.com/watch?v=s0LzliJzoXs

While some dairy farmers flame the udders when they are full of milk, some flame them after the cows have been milked.

Yeah, that’s definitely a problem. Here they’ll just tell you that they don’t have room. But there are several shelters in my area and a couple different animal rescue/re-homing non-profits.

Probably one of the steps to the plan should be to keep a list of contact numbers for all the animal services in your area.

New Plan:

1. Keep small animal carrier, can of cat food, and old towel in trunk at all times.

2. Rescue strays/small animals when encountered and transport them to appropriate animal services center or veterinarian if possible.

(Of course, don’t be a hero, and abort mission if animal seems even slightly dangerous/aggressive and call animal control)

3. Keep animal control number in glovebox at all times.

(I just keep on finding myself in situations were an animal, usually an injured cat, is hanging out near my home or work place and I’m the only one who’s going to do anything about it.)

A Palestinian family cry after their home was demolished by Israeli forces in the East Jerusalem neighbourhood of Beit Hanina on February 5, 2013. Although East Jerusalem belongs to Palestinians, they have to obtain building permits from Israel — an almost impossible task — as Israel continues its ethnic cleansing of Palestinians in its goal to ‘Judaize’ Jerusalem.

Israeli authorities claim that the building was constructed without proper permits and that its structure was not sound. The 33-member family says it was waiting to receive permits.

Palestinians also struggle to meet the required conditions to apply for a permit. For example, the cost of obtaining permits can be as much as the cost of construction of the actual building.

Not only do they rarely issue permits to Palestinians to build on their own land, Israel continues building settlements on said land. Approximately 192,000 and 330,000 Jewish settlers live illegally in East Jerusalem and the West Bank, Palestine. The Jewish-only settlements in which they live are illegal under international law. Furthermore, the Israeli government assists Israeli settlers in taking over Palestinian homes.

Israel refuses to halt settlement construction as a precondition to resume peace talks.
